The default answer, and its problem
Almost everybody reaches for the brightest thing available. It feels decisive. It usually is not. A single harsh source carves the yard into a bright patch and a black rim, and the shadows it makes are darker than the darkness it replaced.Taken together, the advice runs against the instinct. Lower output, wider coverage, careful aim: that is what actually works. It costs about what people were going to spend anyway, and the result is genuinely better.
What replaces the floodlight
The useful goal is no dark pockets, rather than one bright pool. Several modest fixtures beat one aggressive one every time. Even coverage takes away the dark edges, which is what you were actually after.

The roofline run doubles as security lighting. Light coming down the wall covers the approaches without glare. And because it runs on a schedule, it is on every night without anybody deciding to turn it on.
Finding the problem
The dark spots are rarely the obvious ones. Walk the perimeter at eleven o'clock, once. Look at the sides, the back corners, the gate and anywhere a structure blocks a light. Ten minutes outside answers the question.

It is a design question, not a compromise. Light that lands where it was meant to does more, since nothing is wasted on ground that is not yours.
Cameras need light too
Plenty of properties are covered by cameras and still dark. Even coverage gives a camera something to work with. One harsh source produces glare and shadow, which is the worst case. Good security lighting and good camera lighting are the same thing.One more note: leaving everything on all night is not the goal either. Run it at a useful level when people are up, dimmer after.
