The reason the technology matters
Hardware that never comes down faces a harder test than hardware that lives in a box eleven months a year. Traditional bulbs are designed to come down. LEDs generate almost no heat and have nothing fragile inside, which is what makes leaving them up a reasonable idea at all.None of this means you need to understand electronics. But it is worth knowing what you are buying, because the answer tells you how carefully somebody works. The people who can walk you through it are generally the ones doing it properly.
The aluminum part
Each diode sits in an aluminum track, rather than clipped along an edge. The channel is the reason the system looks like nothing in daylight, and it is also what controls the direction of the light. It gets painted to your trim color before it goes up, so the daytime house does not change.
The control question
Each LED in the run can be set independently. That is the difference between a single color across the whole house and something that can alternate, chase or fade. The capability sits there unused most of the year, and then Christmas arrives.Ask to see a finished install in daylight as well as at night, because the daytime view is where careless work shows up and the night view hides almost everything.
The rest of the system
Behind the visible run there is a wire path, a power connection and a controller. Wire routing is the quiet quality signal, since sloppy runs are obvious once you know to look. Ask where the wire goes and where the controller mounts while it is still a conversation.
The long view
The upside of never taking it down has a matching requirement: it has to be installed well the first time. A system installed properly does its job quietly for a long time. A rushed one shows in the first summer, which defeats the entire point. That is why the crew matters as much as the product.
Weather is what the hardware is up against
Permanent hardware faces every kind of day the Upstate has. Sun and heat do the slow damage. Moisture finds every weak joint. Which is why the connections, the seals and the way the wire is terminated matter as much as the diodes.
Dimming
These systems have adjustable brightness, and it changes how the product feels. At full output the house is a statement. Turned down, it is just a lit house. The everyday level is usually modest, and that is the setting doing the actual work.
